VARIATIES OP EEN BEELDENDE BEWEGING

  

De schoonheid van schilderijen ligt in de geest van diegenen die ze aanschouwt. Dit is één van de credo’s van Bert Braam, geboren te Beek bij Nijmegen, bezocht de academie voor Beeldende Kunsten te Arnhem.

Bert is steeds weer in staat binnen de schilderkunst nieuwe wegen in te slaan, de kern van zijn vormentaal te behouden, opnieuw uit te diepen, zich hechtend aan de traditie van de schilderkunst, zijn eigen stijl steeds weer verrassend te ontwikkelen. Wanneer we zijn werk beschouwen, bespeuren we het abstracte expressionisme, zijn penseelvorming is fors en beweeglijk, de composities zijn sterk monumentaal.

De sfeer die hij hiermee oproept is die van een boeiend kleurenpalet zonder te flirten met het oog. ze worden dan ook door de beschouwers typische Bert Braam kleuren genoemd.

De harmonie die hij met zijn werk bereikt hangt sterk samen met zijn gevoel voor vorm en compositie, edoch het zijn geen concrete waarnemingen, het is zijn emotie die de penselen stuurt, soms raadselachtig soms concreet. Doch steeds dezelfde krachtige beeldtaal die het werk zo spannend maakt.

Hij bewerkt zijn doeken net zolang totdat er een bijzondere gelaagdheid ontstaat. Hij begint de verf verdund op te zetten, om daarna met dikkere verf een nieuwe laag aan te brengen. Ook gebruikt hij oilsticks of hij krast in de bijna droge verf om zijn "wereld" te visualiseren.

Tijdens zijn vele reizen, die hem naar de meest afgelegen oorden brachten (hij werkte o.a. met de Aboriginals, de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Australië in hun territorium), werd hij geïnspireerd door het mystieke van de omgeving.

Het werk van Bert Braam wordt in diverse galerieën en musea in binnen- en buitenland tentoongesteld.

My paintings evolve from emotions that are related to the contact between e and my surroundings: nature and all its shapes and people with the radiation have an impact on my erception of the environment. My work is lyrically abstracted, organic. Also narrative, the observer joins in with me looking around in my World, beeing a guest through mystical images out of a dream, changing the down to earth in man into an exceptional form of emotion.

I work with themes: variations on the theme of landscape, growth, oriëntal dreams etc. Paintings do not evolve just like that. What is de relation between the shapes, do they move or are they static. What is the effect of yellow versus red, blue versus grey? Translating my emotions into shapes again and again, of fighting with hematter; I apply my paint layer over layer, remove some by scratching, add some again, I scratch in the paint and then add on to it another thin film that yields a beautiful skin. I work with acrylic paint, and I also use ink. Color is very important to me.

During my journeys to the Oriënt - as well as Marocco, Tunesia and Israël, where I stayed in a Kibbutz near the Golan Highs at the border with Syria - I became fascinated by the earthly colors of these coutries. The terracotta, the beautiful red, the warm yellowhas been recorded by me in various paintings. Titles like "Variation on an Oriental Dream" reflect my emotions in the theme.

During my last stay in Australia, I have ben working in Arnhemland. I had a close realtionship with the Aboriginals, very proud and creative people who stimulated me to make paintings about their land. So I did. Later on in my studio I worked out my impresions on canvas. My work has been on exhibition in various galleries at home as well as abroad.
